Help on Deskspace
-----------------
A Description of Deskspace
--------------------------
Deskspace helps you organise windows by allowing them to reside in
different 'rooms' in a larger 'house'. In effect is makes a much larger
virual desktop giving you much more space to keep windows. Other function
are provided to help possition windows to make life just that little bit
easier.
How to use Deskspace
--------------------
Deskspace doesn't do a tremendous amount but what it does it does well.
The best way to learn how to use it is to load it up and see what it does.
If you get stuck load up interactive help (run the !Help program in the from
the apps directory).
Below is a short summery of Deskspace's functions and how to use them.
The icon bar
------------
This shows a representation of the house and its rooms. Rooms with windows
in are coloured grey. The icon bar can be used to move around rooms, swap
rooms and merge rooms as described later.
Moving to different rooms -------------------------
There are three different ways to move to a different room:-
1) Move the pointer to an edge if the screen to move to the adjacent room.
2) Click on the room you want shown on the icon bar view of the house.
3) Press down an 'Alt' key and a arrow key to move to the room in that
direction.
Organising your Windows
-----------------------
Deskspace provides a number of different ways to organise your windows.
These found on the icon bar menu. The different function are described
below:-
Tile Windows All the windows on the screen are tiled so that all
windows can be seen without any overlapping.
Stack Windows All the windows on the screen are moved into stacks so
that the title bar of each is seen.
Recover Windows All the windows from all the rooms are moved into the
first room, the same as what would happen when you quit
Deskspace.
Hide others If there is a window on the screen that has the input
focus (if its title bar is yellow) then all the other
window that belong to a different application are hidden.
ie If you have five '!Edit' windows open one of which has
the input focus and three '!Draw' windows then the three
'!Draw' windows will be hidden.
Show hidden All the window that have been hidden using 'Hide others'
will now be moved back to the screen.
Allocate Rooms This is the most powerfull function especialy if you end
up with a jumble of windows. This will allocate a room to
each different application, the rooms are allocated
intellegantly so that firstly the application that has the
input focus will get the room where its that window is,
secondly the appliction with the most windows in a room
will get allocated that room.
Organising your Rooms
---------------------
Using the icon bar representation of the house rooms can be moved around
the house and merged with other rooms so that they go where you want them.
Below is a description of what you can do:-
Moving rooms Drag with select to move a room from one place to another.
It will switch places with the room you drag it onto.
Merging rooms Drag with adjust a room to merge it with another.
The Choices Window
------------------
This window allows you take change and save the way Deskspace runs. The
two areas it allows choices to made on are described below:-
Desktop Size Allow you to change how many rooms are in the house.
General Options:-
Don't move room on the icon bar
When this is selected then when the pointer is one the
edge of the screen and on the icon bar then the room won't
change so that the icon bar can scroll.
Raise icon bar to move rooms
When this is selected dragging rooms around the house will
raise the icon bar to the front.
